Ultrasonic Emulsification For Industrial Applications

08 May, 2015 Ultrasonic Processor
ultrasonic emulsification Under the action of ultrasonic energy, two or more immiscible liquids can be mixed together, and one liquid can be dispersed uniformly in the other to form the emulsion liquid, this processing technique is called ultrasonic emulsification.

Emulsion most commonly refers to water-in-oil emulsions, oil-in-water emulsions, and multiple-phase emulsions, and play a unique role in various industrial fields.

Application fields of ultrasonic emulsification

Ultrasonic emulsification has extensively applied in industrial fields of food, paper, paint, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, textiles, petroleum, metallurgy, etc. Ultrasonic devices can be easily installed in existing production line, so it's convenient for manufacturers to upgrade their equipment at lower cost.

Ultrasonic technique is well known and first used for food products such as fruit juices, mayonnaise, baby food, salad oil, and other mixed emulsion. Besides, food emulsifier is also required to maintain the stability during the in-line ultrasonic processing.

In the pharmaceutical and daily use industry, power ultrasound are mainly used in making various emulsion products such as emulsion medicines, cosmetics and shoeshine, etc. Ultrasound emulsification method can also be used for making a emulsion fuel that mixing petrol or diesel and water or coal powder to improve combustion efficiency.

Advantages of ultrasonic emulsification

Rather than using traditional emulsifying technology and equipment(propeller or colloid mill), the benefits of ultrasonic emulsification are obvious:

1) Creat high quality emulsions

Capable to obtain emulsion droplets with small size (only 0.2~2µm) and narrow droplet size distribution(0.1~10µm), it also can increase concentration up to 30%, up to 70% by using emulsifying agent.

2) Stable emulsification effect

Capable to obtain stable emulsions by using less or no emulsifier. After ultrasonic treatment, emulsion can maintain the stability for several months or more than half a year.

3) The type of emulsion can be controlled by ultrasonic emulsification

Under certain conditions, both water-in-oil and oil-in-water can be created by ultrasonic method. As for mechanical method, only the properties of emulsifying agent can control the type of emulsion. For the instance of luene/water emulsion, in the different sound intensity, there will creat different types of emulsion.

4) Low Power Consumption

For example, to creat emulsion with capacity of 4.55 m3/h, and droplets with size of 1µm, reed whistle only needs driving power of 5~7 HP under the working pressure of 10.5~14.1kg/cm2, but high pressure homogenizer needs driving power of 40~50 HP under the working pressure of 70.3~351.6kg/cm2. Available to greatly reduce energy consumption.

5) Creat unique emulsions

Ultrasonic emulsification can also creat the emulsions which the general method can't work. For instanse, the common mixing method can only creat 5% emulsion of paraffin in water, the unbelievable truth is that 20% paraffin emulsion can be made under the action of power ultrasonic field.
